My Profile

This page shows my history of hyperhidrosis treatment.

Treatment history

At first: aluminum chloride solution.
1998 - 2000: Stellate ganglion block, operated twice a month (only in winter).
2000: Lumbar sympathetic ganglion block (3 ports on both right and left side).
2000, Oct: Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) (right T3/T4, left T2/T3).
2002, Jan: ETS Reversal (in Finland).
2005 -: Iontophoresis (Drionic) for foot sweat in winter.
2017, Nov: Botox (for foot sweat)
2019: Iontophoresis (Dermadry) for armpit sweat in summer and foot sweat in winter.

Symptoms (before ETS)

I had a trouble of foot sweat in winter. There was no problem in summer, but on a cold winter day, my feet swelled and sweat oozed out. I had a little of hand sweat but it was not fatal.

Stellate ganglion block

It is a temporary interruption using alcohol. Though the effect was disappeared in a few hours, the purpose was to improve the constitution by repeating it.
For foot sweat, I treated during winter. I took it multiple times, but no effect was obtained.

Lumbar sympathetic ganglion block

This is also using alcohol. I heard that this effect lasts about half a year, but no effect was obtained for me.

Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS)

Though I took Stellate ganglion block and Lumbar sympathetic ganglion block multiple times, I had no effect or side effects. So I took this surgery easily without thinking of danger of nerve block surgery. I didn't know the blocking site at that time, but later I heard from Dr. Telaranta in Finland about the blocking site (right T3/T4, left T2/T3).

Symptoms (after ETS)

There was no change about foot sweat.
At first, I didn't have compensatory sweating after ETS surgery, but it appeared the following spring, then it became serious. I took not only Thoracic sympathetic ganglion block, but also Lumber sympathetic ganglion block, so I think my compensatory sweating was pretty awesome. There was no merit, so I decided to take ETS reversal surgery only one summer.

ETS reversal surgery

I took this surgery in Finland. The cost was 20,000 USD at that time. The nerve was cut from the right calf and transplanted to the chest. The pain immediately after the surgery was severe, but none remained. The recovery is very slow, but I feel it every year.

Botox

This operation was performed on the sole of the foot. I was anesthetized, but really painful. Five or six days later, my foot sweat stopped completely. The effect lasted for about four months. The cost was 60,000 JPN, so I think too expensive to repeat it constantly (even if only during the winter, I need it twice a year...).

Iontophoresis

I used to use drionic before, but now I use dermadry. I got good effect both foot sweat in winter and armpit sweat in summer. Compensatory sweating was increased a little in summer (no CS in winter).
Initial treatment time was about 6 or 7 hours (in total), and maintenance treatment is once a week.

Other

I tried Pro-Banthine of drinking medicine, and Aluminum Chloride of topical medicine. Both was prescribed by a nearby dermatologist.
As I couldn't handle Pro-Banthine because of the drinking time of empty stomach and it was no effect of Aluminum Chloride, so I didn't use them.
